Dear Dr. Idema,

My name is Alissa Cohen and I am on the faculty of the English Language
Center. I am also the coordinator of an innovative mentorship program that
we have been running for several semesters that matches up current
provisionally-admitted English Language Center students with successful
international and domestic academic student mentors at MSU to help them to
prepare for and transition smoothly out of the English Language Center and
into full-time academic studies in their colleges and departments.

This semester, I find myself with several ELC students in my program in the
field of engineering (most in mechanical engineering), but no mentor
applicants with engineering majors. Ideally, I try to match ELC students
with mentors in the same or related field of study, so I am hoping to
attract a few engineering students to the position. Patricia Walters
suggested you might be able to help me to do so.

I am seeking both domestic and international undergraduate students to serve
as mentors. The ideal candidate has completed at least two semesters of
full-time academic study at MSU, has a GPA of at least 3.4, strong
communication skills, a record of successful academic study and MSU or
community involvement, and is interested in leadership and cross-cultural
communication. The position is paid and the hours are somewhat flexible.

The official application deadline has passed and quite frankly, I am under a
time crunch at this point, but if there is any way you could get word out to
engineering students who might be interested, I would be very appreciative.
I am attaching the announcement and application here. Please feel free to
contact me with any questions or to put interested students in contact with
me directly.

Thank you for any help you can offer in getting word out of this valuable
leadership and cross-cultural opportunity.

Sincerely,

Alissa Cohen

English Language Center Faculty

ELC Mentorship Coordinator and Supervisor
