Dear CSE Faculty and Students,
You are invited to attend the 2013 Quello Lecture to be delivered
on *Thursday, November 14, 2013 by Alessandro Acquisti. * Dr. Aquisti is
associate professor at the Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University
(CMU) and co-director of CMU Center for Behavioral and Decision Research.
Professor Acquisti investigates the economics of privacy. His studies
have spearheaded the application of behavioral economics to the analysis
of privacy and information security decision making, and the analysis of
privacy and disclosure behavior in online social networks. Alessandro
has been the recipient of the PET Award for Outstanding Research in
Privacy Enhancing Technologies and the IBM Best Academic Privacy Faculty
Award. He has testified before the U.S. Senate and House committees on
issues related to privacy policy and consumer behavior, and was a TED
Global 2013 speaker. His 2009 study on the predictability of Social
Security numbers (via social media) was featured in the "Year in Ideas"
issue of the NYT Magazine.
*The 2013 Quello Lecture, "Privacy in the Age of Augmented
Reality," *will present the results of a series of experiments
investigating the feasibility of combining publicly available social
media data with off-the-shelf face recognition software for the purpose
of large-scale, automated individual re-identification. Prof.
Acquisti will illustrate the privacy implications of techniques that can
infer personal information (like interests and SSNs) from photos posted
to social media, highlight implications of the convergence of face
recognition technology, online self-disclosures, and the emergence of
'personally predictable' information, and whether current "notice and
consent" approaches to privacy policy are adequate means for privacy
protection in this context.
The lecture will take place on *Thursday, November 14, 6:15-7:15 p.m.,
at the University Club of Michigan State University*, 3435 Forest Road,
Lansing, MI, in the Heritage Room (signs will be posted). The lecture
will be followed by a reception just outside the lecture room. We hope
you will attend!
*Please RSVP by Friday, November 8 to Quello Center Associate Director,
