Sec 001-Topic: Computers in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. IMPORTANT:
Students must bring their own laptop computer to every class. Students
will develop practical skills using personal computers to access online
resources for research and teaching. Computers will be used as tools for
student self-teaching and learning. Topics will likely include: 1)
effective scientific graphing (Excel); 2) multiple sequence alignments
(NCBI and exPASy servers; Jalview); 3) virtual plasmid construction (NCBI
and ExPASy servers); 4) DNA sequence analysis (i.e. restriction enzyme
sites, reading frames, promoters, ribosome attachment sequences,
terminators); 5) evolutionary trees (NCBI and ExPASy servers; BLAST
searches; Jalview); 6) molecular graphics (Visual molecular dynamics
modules on hemoglobin conformational shifts, DNA topoisomerases and RNA
polymerases); 7) molecular dynamics simulations (using simulation files
from Burton laboratory projects); 8) genomics (NCBI and ExPASy servers);
9) transcriptomics (NCBI and ExPASy servers); and 10) gene regulatory
networks (NCBI and ExPASy servers).
