CAS 492-001 (Special Topics): Virtual Teams and Distributed Collaboration

Fall, 2013 Tu/Thur 3:00-4:20 PM

Course Description:

This course focuses on new media and distributed collaboration: how groups work together via technology, practices that are critical to global organizations and business ventures. The course is at the University of Amsterdam and at MSU, and the University of Duisburg-Essen Germany later in the term. Students from all universities work together online. The course teaches principles of distributed collaboration and provides hands-on, experiential learning in working with others across the globe, from different cultures. It focuses on individuals’ and groups’ strategies for effective collaboration and media systems and platforms that support it. There is an instructor at each university—it is not an online course—so that all students get immediate instruction and important class discussions. Students learn first-hand, through guided instruction, in-class reflection, and through trial and error, how best to work with remote colleagues using contemporary communication technology.
