Dear Student:
It is now one week until Election Day, and many of you are preparing to
exercise your most precious right in a democracy - your right to vote.
I wanted to share with you a few important points that I hope will be
helpful to you in voting this year:
* Check to make sure that you are registered and where you are
registered. You can do this at:
https://services2.sos.state.mi.us/mivote/
At this site you can find the address of your polling place.
* If you plan to vote on campus or in East Lansing, you can find
your precinct and polling location at:
http://youvote.msu.edu/EL_voting_locations.htm
The East Lansing City Clerk expects long lines at the polls, so
please plan for this. Polls are open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. on
Election Day.
* Michigan law requires a picture ID to vote. Your MSU student ID
satisfies this requirement and we encourage you to bring your ID
and use it to vote.
* If you wish to vote absentee, requests for absentee ballots must
be received in the mail by 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 1. Get an
absentee ballot application at:
http://youvote.msu.edu/documents/AV_application_generic_Nov_2008.pdf
Mail your completed absentee ballot request to your local city or
county clerk (you can find your clerk at:
https://services2.sos.state.mi.us/mivote/clerksearch.aspx ).
When you receive your ballot in the mail, complete it and return
it immediately - completed absentee ballots must be received by
your clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 4.
* There is one other very important point that has caused a great
deal of concern for many students who have registered in locations
away from East Lansing and would like to vote by absentee ballot.
Under Michigan law, if you registered BY MAIL, and have never
voted before in Michigan, you are required to vote IN PERSON.
There are several ways you can satisfy this requirement, however,
that do not require you to travel on Election Day:
# According to a recent decision by the Michigan Bureau of
Elections, you can now satisfy the "IN PERSON" requirement
by "RE-REGISTERING" at the nearest Secretary of State's
office, providing identification such as a drivers license
or student ID. You are not changing your registration by
doing this - but you are satisfying the requirement that
will allow you to apply for and receive an absentee ballot.
The nearest Secretary of State's office to the MSU campus is
at 400 Albert Avenue in East Lansing.
# You can also satisfy this requirement by requesting an
absentee ballot in person. Go to your local city or
township clerk's office anytime up until 4 p.m. on Monday,
November 3 and request an absentee ballot to fill out and
submit right there. All clerk's offices are required by law
to be open until 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 1.
MSU maintains a website - http://www.youvote.msu.edu/ - to educate
students about voting. This site, which is developed for students by
students, has information about the election, including profiles of
major candidates and issues in this election. Please check this site
for any other questions you might have about the election.
I hope that this information will be helpful to you.
Sincerely,
Lee N. June
