Dear all,

I would like to thank those who sent me their comments and
suggestions. Some clarifications are needed:

We have submitted BMI proposals to the US government. As the
government is still in the continuing resolution mode,
I guess that they will let us know after the new year.

BMI summer courses will have two 3-week sessions, the 1st session
June 25 - July 13 and the 2nd session July 16 - Aug. 3,
with the BMI Conference in-between: July 14-15.

Workshops, panel sessions, and paper sessions will fit into the BMI
conference.

The following is an update. Please continue to send your inputs in!

Call for Workshop Proposals

BMI International Conference on Brain-Mind calls
for Workshops during July 14-15, 20112, organized by
internationally recognized experts, aiming to bring together
researchers on a theme of focused topics. Workshop formats are
flexible. Cross-fertilization of other disciplines and newly
emerging research areas are strongly encouraged. A workshop
typically consists of about 12 oral presentations, each with a
paper or without. Papers submitted to Workshops are to be
peer-reviewed with the same criteria used for the contributed
papers, but the organizers of the workshop deal with the review
process. Workshop papers if applicable will be included in the
conference proceedings. Workshops for brain-storming and teaming
(e.g., for the National Robotics Initiative annually funded by
NSF, NASA, NIH, and USDA, the Scientific Meetings for Creating
Interdisciplinary Research Teams (R13) annually funded by NIH,
and the Science of Organization program annually funded by NSF)
are also encouraged. A proposal for workshop includes an
abstract, a list of authors or participants who have been
contacted and have shown interests, and a short bio of the
organizer(s).

Call for Special Session Proposals

BMI International Conference on Brain-Mind calls
for special sessions during July 14-15, 20112, organized by
internationally recognized experts, aiming to bring together
researchers in special focused topics. Cross-fertilization of
other disciplines and newly emerging research areas are strongly
encouraged. A special session typically consists of about 6 high
quality paper for oral presentation. Papers submitted to special
sessions are to be peer-reviewed with the same criteria used for
the contributed papers. Special session papers will be included
in the conference proceedings. A proposal for special session
includes an abstract, a list of authors who have been contacted
and have shown interests, and a short bio of the organizer(s).

for panels during July 14-15, 20112, organized by
internationally recognized experts, aiming to bring together
researchers in special focused topics for which the solutions or
answers are important but unknown or controversial. Panels
facilitate interactive discussions among the panel members and
between panel members and the audience. Cross-fertilization of
other disciplines and newly emerging research subjects are
strongly encouraged. A proposal for a panel includes an
abstract, a list of panelists who have been contacted and have

Call for Papers

BMI Internal Conference on Brain-Mind calls for
papers in all subjects related to brain-mind to be presented
during July 14-15, 20112. Papers that address issues of multiple
disciplines are strongly encouraged. Theoretical and position
papers that are of wide interest are also called for. BMI also
strives to tolerate new and controversial perspectives. Students
of BMI courses are especially encouraged to submit papers as
their presentations of research results are an integral part of
BMI programs. Papers submitted are to be peer-reviewed by the
BMI International Program Committee. Accepted papers will be
available and searchable at IEEE Explore per BMI plan. Each
paper will be maximum 8 pages. Papers must conform to IEEE
transactions formats. Paper templates are available for <a

Call for Instructors

BMI summer programs will offer courses in biology,
neuroscience, psychology, computer science, electrical
engineering and mathematics. There will be two 3-week sessions,
the 1st session June 25 - July 13 and the 2nd session July 16 -
Aug. 3. For a tentative list of subjects, visit the BMI
Program Page. If the enrollment of a course is healthy, we
plan to pay instructor's home institution rate. Each course will
provide a teaching assistant (TA) for homework grading and
assistance in possible production of the textbook for the
following years. The instructor can suggest candidate for TA
from his home institution if he prefers. An application for BMI
course instructor includes a detailed curriculum vitae, the BMI
course number to teach, a sample syllabus of the most related
course that he has taught, the salary rate per week that he
expects, the expected round-trip air-ticket cost, and the names
of three references to stockman@cse.msu.edu and weng@cse.msu.edu
by January 15, 2012. If two instructors plan to co-teach a
course, indicate the material and the number of instruction days
of each instructor.

Call for Registrations

BMI summer courses will have two 3-week sessions,
the 1st session June 25 - July 13 and the 2nd session July 16 -
Aug. 3. BMI courses encourage on site participation to interact
with the instructors and students. For those who have
difficulties to be on site for a total duration of 3 weeks for
each course, material for course lectures is available in
digital form for those who have enrolled.

On-site participation of ICBM in the same year is required
for all course related activities as part of the requirements
of the BMI 6DC program, including one-course enrollment,
two-course enrollment, and non-course subject tests.

The courses in the first session do not offer off-site tests
because of the close proximity between the test time and the
required conference participation.

Off-site tests are offered for courses offered in the second
course session only. Approvable applications for
pre-arrangement are submitted at least 168 hours (7 days)
before the test time.

Non-course subject tests are meant for those who have
received a bachelor, master, or doctoral degree in the
corresponding discipline, but there is no guarantee that a
candidate can pass such a test without enrollment in the
corresponding BMI course. Applications for non-course subject
tests are submitted at least 168 hours (7 days) before the
test time.

All BMI subject tests are on paper, on-site or off-site. An
off-site test must be completed in the same time length as the
on-site test, within 24 hours from the starting time of the
on-site test, proctored by an pre-approved proctor.

A typical 6DC awardee takes 4 to 5 BMI courses and
takes 1 to 2 subject tests for the remaining disciplines that
well match his prior degree training. Prior degree certificates
themselves are not accepted for BMI 6DC. There is a wide
variation in degree programs offered in the world and in the
length of time since the degree was received. In each course
session, each candidate can register only one course, plus
optionally one non-course test during 5:30pm - 8:00pm of the
test day. If a candidate register 2 courses per summer, he can
receive 6DC in a minimum of two years.
