Reader / Chair in Intelligent Robotics
Department of Computer Science
Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK

Closing Date: 31 August 2017
Interview Date: 22 September 2017
For information and to apply, please go to http://jobs.aber.ac.uk.

The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint a Reader / Chair (depending on
experience) in the area of Intelligent Robotics. The post-holder will be expected to provide
academic leadership in Robotics, with a preference for Space Robotics, and to contribute to all
areas of the Institute’s activities, including research, teaching, and administration but with the
major focus on research. The post-holder will have an excellent research record compatible with
the purpose of the post, and will be expected to undertake and encourage research of world
leading quality.

The Department consists of the following four research groups:

1. The Intelligent Robotics Group at Aberystwyth has a long track record in successful robotics
research and collaborates with a variety of industrial and academic partners in the UK and
overseas. We are one of the largest and most well-known robotics groups in the UK,
carrying out research that falls under the umbrella of "unconstrained environments" in the
context of both software and hardware.

2. The Vision, Graphics and Visualisation Group focuses on: (medical) image analysis and
understanding; extraction of the 3D structure of complex objects; appearance-based
methods to provide mobile robots with various capabilities including topological mapping
and pose stabilisation; and analysis of images for plant science, heritage and faces.

3. The Bioinformatics Group is one of the UK’s leading groups working at the interface between
computer science and the biological sciences. Its current work concentrates on areas
including: data analysis of large scale biological data; formalisation of biological data;
systems biology; biomedical informatics; genetics; pharmacogenomics. The group is also
involved with plant genome and phenome data analysis in collaboration with members of
staff at IBERS.

4. The Advanced Reasoning Group conducts ground-breaking work on automated diagnosis
and failure analysis, and develops world-leaading computational techniques for knowledge
model formulation and simplification. It has an excellent track record of building intelligent
decision support systems for crime detection and prevention, engineering design analysis,
and computer-based diagnosis. For further details, please look at: http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/cs/

Aberystwyth is a small attractive town on the west coast of Wales, with a low crime rate and
excellent schools. It is set in rural surroundings and within easy reach of the Pembrokeshire
Coast and Snowdonia National Parks. It is a cultural and educational centre with a very active
Arts Centre, and its own major copyright library, the National Library of Wales.

The post is available immediately for the post-holder to start in September 2017 or as soon as
possible thereafter. Prospective applicants may discuss the post informally with the Head of
Department, Dr Bernie Tiddeman (e-mail: bpt at aber.ac.uk<mailto:bpt at aber.ac.uk>) or Professor Qiang Shen, Institute
Director, Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.
