GENERAL AIM
--------------------

Autonomous robots need advanced cognition to perform complex tasks
efficiently in real-world environments: this means not only the acquisition
of specific sensorimotor skills, but also the ability to handle novel
situations beyond learned schemas, generalising what is learned to
unexpected scenarios.
Human infants learn action possibilities provided by the objects, i.e. the
object affordances, either by actively exploring them or by observing
others' actions. This learning progressively extends to interactions among
different objects, eventually leading to the discovery of tool use and to
the emergence of prediction and planning capabilities, which are exploited
to solve complex tasks through powerful generalisation mechanisms.
Interestingly, some other animals show similar cognitive capabilities (e.g.
primates, crows).
Inspired by these observations, roboticists have been working on
computational models for learning object affordances and tool use, that can
be employed for prediction and planning, thus enhancing robot autonomy.

The goal of this Special Issue of the Transactions of Autonomous Mental
Development is to depict the current state of the art concerning the
development of such models in cognitive robots, and to possibly open novel
directions. We specifically encourage submissions that highlight
collaborative work with researchers from related disciplines, such as
psychology or neuroscience, as well as experimental works that show the
emergence of cognitive behaviors in real complex robotic platforms (e.g.
humanoid robots).
Also, extended versions of the works presented at the recent IROS 2015
Workshop "Learning Object Affordances: a fundamental step to allow
prediction, planning and tool use?" (objectaffordances.blogspot.pt) are
solicited.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
----------------------------------------

Submissions of regular papers (up to 12 double column pages) will be
considered. Decision of acceptance/rejection will be based on scientific
contribution, originality, and relevance to the topics of the special
issue. Moreover, submitted papers will be evaluated in terms of how the
described work contributes to, or interfaces with, relevant research in the
behavioral sciences (e.g., psychology, linguistics, etc.), and in
particular, learning and development in infants and/or children.

We are accepting submissions through Manuscript Central at:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral. (please select the special issue as the
submission type)

Authors should mention that "this paper is for the special issue on
Affordances" as a note to the Editor at the time of submission through
manuscript central.

Instructions for authors: http://ieee-cis.org/pubs/tamd/

It is anticipated that the journal is going to change the name in IEEE
Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems, please be advised that
the submission website will be updated accordingly.
