WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Successful deployment of robots in our society requires these systems to
deal with high complexity and wide variability of their surroundings to
perform typical everyday tasks in public spaces. As interaction with
humans increases, so does the demand for sophisticated robotic
capabilities associated with high-level cognitive functions. Combining
results from the traditional robotics discipline (e.g., related to
navigation, manipulation, perception, motion planning) with those from
AI and cognitive science (e.g., planning, spatial/temporal reasoning,
diagnosis, learning, natural language understanding) is thus essential
for robotics. These synergies also benefit AI (e.g., as observed in
recent advances in hybrid planning and spatial reasoning) and cognitive
science (e.g., as observed in recent studies combining human and robot
participants and the ongoing discussion in the HRI community on how
humans perceive robots).

With these motivations, the workshop aims

* to provide an informal platform for researchers to discuss the
challenges and benefits of combining AI reasoning and cognitive science
with robotics in various application areas such as service robotics,
industrial robotics, medical robotics, etc.;

  * to exchange ideas about the future research directions that
involve such synergies, considering all aspects of the theory and
implementation of robotic systems in these applications.

We invite submissions of research papers from all researchers and
practitioners interested in integration of AI and cognitive science with
robotics.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Potential participants are invited to submit either

  - a regular paper of 6 pages (i.e., a technical paper for describing
technically sound, innovative ideas; an application paper, where the
emphasis is on its impact on the robotic application domain; a
system/tool paper, where the emphasis is on its novelty, practicality,
usability and availability), or

  - a short paper of 2 pages (i.e., a position paper describing
specific questions and issues that the participants feel should be
addressed; a demo paper describing a demonstration of a robotic
application, system or tool; a technical communication aimed at
describing recent developments and new projects).

All papers will be presented during the workshop.

Submissions are accepted in PDF format only, using the RSS formatting
guidelines. The workshop contributions will be published electronically.
