Dear All,

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) and a PhD student to work on a cross-disciplinary research project “SWARM-ORGAN” recently funded by EU FP7. The SWARM-ORGAN project will focus on systems containing large numbers of autonomous but relatively simple agents, whose goal is to collectively organise themselves into complex spatial arrangements despite each agent having only local awareness. 

You will work in the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) Group within the Computing Department, University of Surrey, in collaboration with other three world-leading research teams from Spain, the Netherlands, and UK.

The PDRA will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related area. Expertise in computational modelling of developmental systems controlled by gene regulatory networks are expected, experience in self-organising collective systems or swarm robots is a plus. The PhD candidate should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in a relevant subject. Programming skills in C/C++ or Matlab are required for both positions. Good communication skills in spoken and written English are also expected. 

The PDRA position is open in March 2013 for a duration of 3.5 years, and the fully funded PhD position starts in April 2013 for 3 years.
